Opera developer 48.0.2643.0 update

Opera Desktop Team - Mon, 07/03/2017 - 07:23

Hello,

We continue to improve our converter tools in today’s Opera 48 developer update. We already introduced 14 different unit converters for you last time.

Today we’re changing how converters are triggered. You don’t need to precisely select the value to convert; Opera is more flexible in locating units of measurements within a highlighted text.

Today’s build also comes with stability fixes, visual improvements and new functionalities. You might notice some of these changes:

  • Opera was crashing after loading all tabs from a folder on the bookmarks bar
  • [Mac] The ad blocker doesn’t cover very long web addresses anymore
  • [Win] Opera can now import user content from Edge
  • [Win] Updated plus icon in toolbar
  • [Win] Opera was crashing when a bookmark was deleted using the keyboard
  • [Win7][HiDPI] Thin Aero stripe above sidebar is not visible on the title bar anymore
  • [Linux] Warning dialogs became native ones
  • Chromium updated to 61.0.3128.0

Known issues:

  • DNA-62304 – [Mac] Left mouse click does not work on tab of certain width
  • DNA-62305: Crash when loading prerendered page after visiting opera:settings
    • Workaround: Disable ‘Predict network actions to improve page load performance’

  • Language fixes
  • Visual fixes for some annoying glitches (you might not have spotted them, but we did)
  • Video pop out received more tweaks
  • [macOS] Sidebar extensions have regained focus and are working correctly again
  • [macOS] Full screen is not broken anymore after auto-playing videos on YouTube
  • New check intervals for personal news: 3 and 6 hours
  • Bookmarks pop up sometimes contained “Finished” button while “View in Bookmarks” was expected – fixed
  • Bookmarks manager didn’t allow to restore folder from the trash bin – fixed
  • [Windows] [Security] We added .scf to the risky file extensions list
  • ‘Blinking address’ issue is fixed (some of you complained about that)
  • We extended the ‘Recently Closed’ tabs list limit to 32 from the original 10
  • The difficult-to-read white text seen on folders in dark theme, with no wallpaper, on the Speed Dial has now been made readable
  • Windows 7 Aero users should no longer see occasional flashes of background images when switching between Youtube videos
  • Improved color contrasts in light theme for better readability
  • There is a “copy” when hovering over the currency converter to copy the value to your clipboard

Opera developer 48

Opera Desktop Team - Mon, 06/26/2017 - 07:57

Greetings,

As summer holidays heat up, we are unveiling the next cycle of Opera. Our Opera 48 developer build expands on the unit converter, sharpens new toolbar icons, improves visibility of dark icons, and fixes a few stability issues.

Making Opera a fraction better than before

In our last developer update, we unveiled the unit converter to the search pop up tool. Working much like the currency converter, highlighting units of measurement can be converted between imperial and metric. Fourteen types of conversions were made available at the start.

Opera 48 makes this tool more precise with support for converting fractions. The unit converter can now recognise an array of Unicode subscript and superscript forms, such ½ ft, 1⁄4 mi or even ³⁄₄₇ gal. You will notice, too, that imperial volume labels, such as gal (gallons) or mpg (miles per gallon), are now visible.

As you plan your summer travels or prepare a barbecue recipe using unfamiliar measurements, give the unit converter a try. Let us know if you find value and number forms which cannot be converted when highlighted.

Sharpening the view

Today’s developer build has sharpened toolbar icons for Windows and better visibility for dark icons in the bookmark and extensions bars while in dark theme.

Chromium has been updated to 60.0.3112.20.

Peruse the changelog for the full report on stability improvements.

Opera 46 goes final, more quality and Opera’s first TV ad

Opera Desktop Team - Thu, 06/22/2017 - 03:56

Today’s stable release is stage two of the Reborn project. Opera 46 improves the quality of Opera Reborn by introducing more user interface changes, reducing crashes, fixing issues for built-in browser VPN, and adding support for animated PNG files (APNG).

First release after Reborn

Reborn has generated huge interest, marking a big step forward in the development of our browser. We do not stop there but keep adding new flavors to the Opera UI. The latest version comes with visual improvements, usability enhancements and as well as new functionality. Here are some of the things you can expect:

  • Speed Dial is now dark when wallpapers are disabled and dark theme is enabled
  • When importing bookmarks, items from the bookmarks bar will appear in Opera’s bookmark bar automatically
  • Macbook touchbar users can enjoy an emoji-enabled input field

New backgrounds

If you’re looking for the full Reborn experience, you can try the exclusive backgrounds. We have partnered with top industry artists Umberto Daina and Feridun Akgüngör to create a custom set of fresh, cool backgrounds. There are many others to choose from, including animated ones.

Focus on stability

In the last months we dedicated even more time to achieve greater stability of Opera. We fixed various crashes, memory leaks and glitches that impair user experience. So far the focus on quality has given a generous 35% reduction in crashes per user, making the latest Opera browsers the very best in terms of stability.

Support for animated PNG

Opera now supports APNGs, or animated PNG files. These are similar to your regular GIFs, but smaller. APNG also supports 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency which help them maintain quality. This format has become quite popular recently, particularly since Apple adopted the APNG file format for iOS 10 iMessage apps. It’s worth noting that APNG was also supported in Presto.

Watch the APNG demo and learn more about this format.

Latest engine, better performance

Opera 46 runs on tuned Chromium version 59, which introduces expensive background tab throttling. This technology reduces the processing power required for background tabs and improves battery life and overall browsing performance. Try it out yourself with this background timer throttling demo.

To learn more about changes in engine itself visit dev.opera.com.

Opera’s first TV ad

Together with this release, we are also launching our first TV advertisement for the browser. The ad will go live in our biggest market, Russia and is a celebration of all the reactions you have when you watch content of the internet.

Enjoy browsing with Opera 46, and stay tuned for more Reborn improvements this summer.
